Web standards

Web standards is a general term for the formal standards and other technical specifications, established by the W3C and other standards bodies.

All of our websites are coded using standards compliant XHTML and CSS. For sites that need dynamic interactivity we use javascript and AJAX. And on larger, more complex projects requiring database functionality we use PHP or ASP .net and MySQL.

For Structure, we use

HTML
XHTML
XML

For Presentation, we use

CSS
MathML (Mathematical Markup Language)
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics)

When a document is said to adhere to web standards, it means that the document, besides using the above technologies:

  • Consists of valid HTML or XHTML
  • Uses CSS instead of tables for layout
  • Properly structured and semantically coded
  • Works in any web browser

Why web standards:

Consistent Look and Feel:
All styles are defined separately in a central css file. Separation of style from the content enables to give a consistent look and feel to the website.

Improved search engine ranking:
CSS driven website helps in improving content to code ration by removing junk code. This improves the structural organization of the code, their by improving its readability. Using optimized content rich code makes it easy for the search engine to index it more accurately and achieve better ranking.

Easy to maintain:
With all the styles defined in single CSS file makes the maintenance easy. It eliminates the tedious job of making same changes on each and every page. It easy to understand the semantic and structured code even though its created by some one else.

Cross browser compatible:
By writing clean code that conforms to the W3C standards will give consistent results across all browser platforms. Major browsers include – IE6, IE7, Safari, firefox (windows and mac), Opera.

Accessible to different devices:
Semantic HTML, where structure is separated from presentation, makes it easy to interpret the content on different devices like cell phones, pda, screen reader.

Minimal bandwidth requirement:
Clean, structured code and all presentation elements in single file, helps in decreasing the file sizes and quicker downloads.
